From Industrial to Digital Citizenship

La rubrica verte sulle nuove diseguaglianze prodotte dalla Rivoluzione Digitale e sulle strategie per affrontarle. L’epoca digitale viene perciò interpretata dal punto di vista delle questioni sociali che solleva nel quadro di una radicale asimmetria fra chi controlla le architetture del cyberspazio e chi ne è semplicemente utente. Attraverso un confronto serrato fra lo scenario ‘industriale’ del secolo scorso e quello ‘digitale’ del nostro tempo, la rubrica mira a un duplice obiettivo. Da una parte, essa intende discutere come i tradizionali diritti di cittadinanza sociale dell’età industriale possono essere ripensati nel mutato scenario tecnologico del nostro secolo e implementati nella sfera digitale in vista della fondazione di un welfare compiutamente post-industriale. Dall’altra parte, ciò impone di comprendere i diritti di cittadinanza digitale ben oltre la sfera della privacy cui essi sono rimasti finora confinati. Su questi temi, la rubrica propone dibattiti e interviste con esperti e specialisti delle tecnologie digitali.

Federico Tomasello is a senior research fellow at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage, and a visiting fellowat the European University Institute, Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. He holds a PhD in History of Political Thought and the Italian qualification of Associate Professor of Political Philosophy and of History of Political Doctrines and Institutions. Since 2019 he has been a research associate of the Global Citizenship Governance programme funded by the European Research Council and jointly hosted by the EUI (Florence) and the WZB (Berlin). Since 2020 he has been running a ‘Supporting Principal Investigators’ grant programme at the University of Venice with a project on digital citizenship rights. He has held research, teaching, and visiting positions at the Universities of Bologna, Florence, Padua, and Venice, the Scuola Normale Superiore, European University Institute, WZB-Berlin Social Science Centre, Université Paris-1, and Université de Neuchatel. He has presented conference papers in the United States, Greece, France, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. His track record of publications includes four research monographs, five peer-reviewed articles, three edited volumes, two journal special issues, and more than twenty book chapters and articles. In 2020 he published the book L’ordine della città. Violenza e spazio urbano(Manifestolibri) and edited the volume Violenza e politica. Dopo il Novecento (Il Mulino). 

Isabella De Michelis di Slonghello is the CEO and founder of Ernieapp Ltd, a technology start-up, based in Dublin (Ireland) incorporated in January 2017. Company is focusing on taking to market a new consumer oriented “privacy service” implementing some of the strictest requirement set by the GDPR.

Isabella is also the MD and founder of High Pulse Gmbh, (2014) a strategic advisory and consulting company accounting businesses and governments among its clients. Company specializes in wireless, mobile and broadband policies advisory, telecom regulatory strategies, digital transformation; investment strategies; venture financing, policy communication.

Isabella was the corporate sponsor and founder in 2011 of the Technology Innovation and Investment Council (TIIC now renamed 4IP), an IPR advocacy focused think-tank, grouping large and SME high tech companies putting “innovation” at the heart of their vision for growth. She served as Board member and first Chairwoman until 2014.
